Vijnana Bhairava: The Threshold Before Sleep

A dharana that uses the drowsy threshold state just before sleep — neither fully waking nor fully asleep — as a doorway, since ordinary mental control has already begun to loosen there on its own.

The theory, briefly

Several of Vijnana Bhairava Tantra's 112 dharanas use naturally occurring altered states rather than states that must be manufactured through effort. This one uses the hypnagogic threshold just before sleep — the drowsy interval in which waking control over thought has already begun to relax, but full unconsciousness has not yet taken over.

The method is to bring alert attention into this state precisely as it is happening, rather than either fighting to stay fully awake or letting go completely into sleep. Because ordinary mental effort is already partially suspended in this state, it is considered easier to notice awareness itself, underneath the fading waking mind, than during full waking alertness when mental effort tends to obscure it. The instruction is delicate: enough wakeful attention to notice the state, without enough effort to pull oneself back to full wakefulness.

The practice

Watching the Drowsy Threshold

818 minutes · Lying down, wherever you already sleep, at the natural point of falling asleep — no setup needed.

  1. 1As you lie down to sleep and begin to feel genuinely drowsy, rather than letting go completely, hold a thin thread of alert attention.
  2. 2Notice the quality of this in-between state: thoughts becoming looser and less directed, images arising on their own, the ordinary effort of waking thought fading.
  3. 3The tradition has a name for this: nirvikalpa, a state free of thought-constructs — elsewhere called turiya, the transcendental fourth state beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.
  4. 4Do not try to analyze or hold onto what you notice — simply remain lightly aware of the state itself as it unfolds.
  5. 5The text says it is by concentrating on exactly this thought-free threshold that what it calls the Supreme Goddess reveals herself — not a separate goal to reach, but what becomes apparent in this state once it's simply attended to.
  6. 6If you find you have become fully alert again, let effort go and allow drowsiness to return naturally before trying again.
  7. 7If you fall asleep before completing the practice, that is not a failure — the value is in the noticing itself, however briefly it lasted.
  8. 8Whatever you notice in this threshold — however brief, however unclear — let that be enough for tonight; the practice can be returned to another night in just the same way.
